She was born to the late Nolan and Wynell Robinson on November 05, 1943. As a Native Atlantan, MaryEm attended Grady High School and was a graduate of West Georgia College with degrees in Sociology and Music Education. She married the late John West in 1966 and they lived together, raising their family in Carrollton and later Marietta, until his passing in 1981. In 1993, MaryEm married the late Jason Byce, with whom, as a child and youth, she shared membership at the First Baptist Church of Atlanta and years of service in the vocal music program.

MaryEm was a 30-year veteran as a Choral Music Director within the Carroll & Cobb County School Systems where she retired in 2004. She was a passionate director with an immense love of her students and took great pride in showcasing their talents, along with expressing her own love of music.

I am just devastated to learn of Emma's death in May - she was my bestie at Grady.  I am so sad to hear this.  I wondered if she'd been sick a long time.  I havent heard from her in a couple of years.

I  do not recall anyone who did not like MaryEm.  She had a wide circle of friends and always was friendly to others.
